including such luminaries as Edward Hopper,
Charles Webster Hawthorne, and Hans Hofmann.
In the oyster-rich town of Wellfleet, you’ll find a
similar reverence for the arts. It is epitomized at
the Wellfleet Preservation Hall, a hub of cultural
activity. Here you can dive into arts classes,
enjoy visual art exhibits and take in a lively slate
of music, film, and spoken word performances
throughout the year.
Since 1998, the Payomet Performing Arts Center
has been attracting local, regional, and national
acts in music, comedy, theater, and film to Truro.
Its Cirque by the Sea is a family-friendly show
that provides a dazzling array of acrobatics,
aerial skills, and juggling, blended perfectly with
humor and storytelling.
It’s appropriate that one of Wellfeet’s crown
jewels of art — the Frying Pan Gallery — is housed
in an oyster shack that dates back more than 100
years. The gallery is curated by musician Sarah
Swain (her band Sarah Swain & the Oh Boys is
always a popular draw throughout the year), and
features the work of more than 20 Cape artists,
including her husband Steve, a steel sculptor.
